28 Feb 2022
On Friday 25 February, the current cohort of Monteverdi Apprentices gave a lunchtime recital at our London home, St Martin-in-the-Fields, marking our first concert of 2022.
Our string Apprentices, auditioned in autumn 2019, are having an extended period of activities because of the necessary hiatus in 2020 and 2021, and so we were especially pleased that they could – at last – give their first recital as an ensemble in their own right.
Following a week of intensive workshops with their mentors from the ORR, Peter Hanson (leader) and Robin Michael (principal cello), the Apprentices performed a varied programme of chamber music for strings by Schubert, Mendelssohn, Puccini and Turina.
They will return to St Martin’s at 7pm on 25 March for an evening recital as part of the church’s ‘Crypt Lates’ series – click here to find out more and book tickets.

As part of their Apprenticeships these young musicians had previously rehearsed and performed with John Eliot Gardiner and the Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique (ORR) in all nine of Beethoven’s symphonies in 2020, and in Berlioz’s oratorio L’enfance du Christ last December. After their recital in March, they will conclude their time as Apprentices when they join the ORR for performances of Beethoven’s Missa solemnis in the autumn.
