The Monteverdi Choir and English Baroque Soloists presented a 'tremendous performance' The Guardian of Purcell’s Dido & Aeneas under the hull of the historic Cutty Sark, looming over the narrative like a spectre of the Trojan fleet, and on tour at the Bergen International Festival.
A cast of leading soloists brought this drama – based on Book IV of Virgil’s Aeneid – to life as never before. The production incorporated Purcell’s Funeral Sentences, written for the funeral of Queen Mary, who founded the Royal Hospital for Seamen on the site of the present Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich.
