On Sunday 15 January 2023, John Eliot Gardiner was awarded an Honorary Doctorate at the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music, Budapest. The ceremony was held in the institution’s main building on Liszt Ferenc Square.

“Sir John Eliot Gardiner is an authentic and outstanding representative of international music life, whose professional achievements have been the subject of intense attention for decades. He is an iconic figure in both the research and performance art of early music,”

John Eliot Gardiner received this award for his dedication to the cultivation and service of music. The Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music, Budapest grants the honorary doctorate title in exceptional cases. The honorary doctorate was last given to the world-famous violinist Yehudi Menuhin twenty years ago. The list of honorary doctors also includes Lajos Bárdos, Pál Kadosa and Antal Molnár.

The English Baroque Soloists and John Eliot Gardiner performed a programme of orchestral works by Haydn and Mozart at the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall, Budapest on Saturday 14 January 2023 with renowned soloists Isabelle Faust and Antoine Tamestit, as part of the ‘Programme of Müpa’.
