The Monteverdi Choir and English Baroque Soloists with conductor Peter Whelan performed Handel’s biblical oratorio Israel in Egypt at the Salzburg Festival in July 2024.
Intricate and detailed throughout, but in its overall jubilant, assertive, even combative monumentality, it was brilliant—especially through the sonorous splendour, vocal agility, and internal emotion of the Monteverdi Choir, impeccably supported by the English Baroque Soloists under Peter Whelan.
Sunday's performance proved to be a highlight of the Ouverture spirituelle…The Monteverdi Choir…presented itself in top form.”
For the Monteverdi Choir, this is something of a signature piece. With the agility that only a native English-speaking ensemble can achieve, they recount the tortures that befall Egypt.
